By NBC News' Tom Costello

A London-bound United Airlines flight made a unexpected landing in Canada early Monday after a mechanical problem with an engine was detected.

United Flight 130 was on its way from Washington Dulles to London Heathrow when the pilot decided to divert the plane and land in St. John's, Newfoundland.

The Boeing 757-200, carrying 50 passengers and nine crew members, landed safely.?

Airline spokesman Christen David said United reaccommodated passengers on other flights to London.

On Monday, British media reported the jet suddenly lost altitude. However, sources told NBC News there was no sudden drop in altitude. The pilot performed a gradual descent and there was no severe turbulence.
