Rifle. Rifle Tops John Jay in NCAA Qualifier

Feb. 16, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy rifle team defeated John Jay, 4603-4187, on Saturday afternoon at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range in the NCAA Qualifier. Saturday's match score of 4603 will count as half of the team's total in the NCAA Championship qualification process. The other half comes from an average of three matches shot previously this season. The NCAA?then adds the two scores together and the top eight teams will qualify for the national tournament in early March. Navy came into today ranked 13th. The NCAA Championship team selections will be announced Wednesday and the individual selections on Thursday.

"I'd say today's performance was lackluster. We needed a really strong performance and we just didn't get it," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "Maybe we were pushing too hard, but it wasn't the score we were looking for."

The Mids shot a 2279 in smallbore and a 2324 in air rifle. John Jay shot a 2060 in smallbore and a 2127 in air rifle.

Navy junior Steven Frazier was the only shooter to fire a score in the 570s in smallbore as he notched a 579. Freshman Jodi Cull-Host followed with a 569, while Zach Gibson shot a 567 and Alex Berry a 560.

In air rifle, Navy senior Ryan Williams topped all shooters with a 587, topping his season average score in the discipline by nearly two points. Gibson had the second-highest score at 583. Cull-Host and Frazier followed with a 578 and 576, respectively.

"Hopefully, Steven and Ryan will be able to qualify individually for the NCAA Championships. That would be good to see," said Kelley.
