There are a number of issues that a student should consider before undertaking a program in Phlebotomy training. It is important to realize that Phlebotomists work with and around blood all day. So, anyone who faints at the sight of blood is not a good candidate for this type of job.
It was once thought that individuals who fainted at the sight of blood were squeamish or had a weak stomach. Now, psychologists have identified a particular condition that causes some people to have an extreme and even fearful reaction at the sight of blood. These individuals experience a drop in blood pressure that causes them to pass out, when they see blood. This is true, whether the blood is their own or someone else?s. These individuals are probably not well suited for phlebotomy training.
This phobia or extreme reaction to blood is unique in that it causes fainting. While people suffering from other types of phobias may feel that they are about to pass out, they do not actually lose consciousness. However, with a reaction to blood, fainting is very common. This is why professionals receive training in identifying patients who may faint during their Phlebotomy training.
