Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson has today?officially opened an exciting new space in a Sunshine Coast children?s camp facility.

Mr Dickson said the new $173,000 rock climbing and abseiling tower at the Apex Youth Camp in Mudjimba would make visits even more memorable for local kids.

?A government grant of more than $130,000 went towards the new camp facilities, with Apex Youth Camps Limited providing the remaining funding,? he said.

?The 12 metre high structure has a unique design which enables wheelchair access so people of all abilities can use the wall.

?The new rock climbing and abseiling tower will also complement other camp activities including archery, high ropes challenge course, bush skills, mountain biking and canoeing.

?The Newman Government is committed to getting Queensland kids into more active and healthy lifestyles, and this new adventure equipment is just another way we?re reaching that goal.

?Participation in sport and recreational activities like those on offer at the Apex Youth Camp is not only fun for kids, it?s essential to building vibrant and healthy communities.?

Mr Dickson said the camp was frequently used by schools, church groups conducting holiday camps for under-privileged children and organisations including Camp Quality and Surf Life Saving Queensland.

?We are serious about providing better sporting equipment and facilities, so more Queenslanders can get involved in sport and recreation clubs, particularly underprivileged kids,? he said.

?That?s why we?ve created the Get in the Game program, which gives young Queenslanders who need it most the opportunity to get involved in local sporting clubs.

?Our grass roots focus could also inspire some of our future sporting stars- students as young as 10 years old going to school today will be eligible to compete at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.?
