Obama cranks up "fiscal cliff" pressure, Boehner says talks stalemated

HATFIELD, Penn. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama turned up the pressure in "fiscal cliff" talks on Friday, hitting the road to drum up support for his drive to raise taxes on the wealthy and warning Americans that Republicans were offering them "a lump of coal" for Christmas.

In a visit to a Pennsylvania toy factory, Obama portrayed congressional Republicans as Scrooges who risked sending the country over the fiscal cliff rather than strike a deal to avert the tax increases and spending cuts that begin in January unless Congress intervenes.

In Washington, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner declared a stalemate in the talks and said Obama's plan to raise taxes on the rich was the wrong approach.

"There is a stalemate. Let's not kid ourselves," the Ohio Republican said. "Right now we are almost nowhere."

Lawmakers are nervously eyeing the markets as the deadline approaches, with gyrations likely to intensify pressure to bring the drama to a close.

Major stock market indexes fell as Boehner spoke but recovered afterward. It was a repeat of the pattern earlier in the week when the Speaker offered a gloomy assessment.

The latest round of high-stakes gamesmanship focuses on whether to extend the temporary tax cuts that originated under former President George W. Bush beyond their December 31 expiration date for all taxpayers, as Republicans want, or just for those with income under $250,000, as Obama and his fellow Democrats want.

"If Congress does nothing, every family in America will see their taxes automatically go up on January 1," Obama said during his visit to a factory in suburban Philadelphia. "That's sort of like the lump of coal you get for Christmas. That's a Scrooge Christmas."

Obama, who made higher tax rates for the wealthy a centerpiece of his re-election campaign, said Americans should pressure Republicans to quickly agree to extend the middle-class tax cuts that cover 98 percent of the public.

"We already all agree, we say, on making sure middle-class taxes don't go up. So let's get that done. Let's go ahead and take the fear out for the vast majority of American families so they don't have to worry," Obama said at The Rodon Group factory, which makes K'NEX building toy systems as well as Tinkertoys and consumer products.

'VICTORY LAP'

Obama's trip to Pennsylvania was part of a renewed public relations push on the fiscal cliff that the White House hopes will build support for his stance. The effort has infuriated Republicans, with Boehner calling it a "victory lap" on Thursday as he rejected Obama's proposals to avoid the cliff.

"It tells you he's not interested in negotiating. He's more interested in traveling around the country trying to campaign," Representative Jim Gerlach, a Pennsylvania Republican, said on CNBC on Friday.

The effort continues next week, as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Obama's lead negotiator in the talks, makes the rounds of television talk shows on Sunday. Obama will meet a bipartisan group of governors at the White House on Tuesday, and the president will address the Business Roundtable on Wednesday.

Boehner is scheduled for an appearance on Fox News Sunday.

Obama and Boehner both said they still believe the two sides can work together to find a solution before the end-of-year deadline.

But Boehner has been scrambling to keep his House Republicans in line, with some signaling more flexibility on ways to find a combination of new revenue and spending cuts that could yield an agreement.

Most House Republicans refuse to back higher rates, preferring to raise revenue through tax reform. But some have suggested they would support a deal with higher rates for the rich if it includes significant cuts in the government-sponsored Medicare and Medicaid healthcare entitlement programs.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky told the Wall Street Journal in an interview that Republicans would agree to more revenue - although not higher tax rates - if Democrats agreed to such changes as raising the eligibility age for Medicare and slowing cost-of-living increases in the Social Security retirement program.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, who has opposed such changes, brushed off the comments. "Nothing new in that statement from Mitch McConnell," she said.

Moderate Republican Representative Steven LaTourette of Ohio, who is retiring at year's end, said he would back some high-end tax rate increases if the deal reforms Medicare.

He said he would support new limits on high-income earners' Medicare benefits, and raising the eligibility age for entitlement programs.

Obama said he was encouraged by the shifting views of some Republicans, and urged House approval of a bill that has already cleared the Democratic-controlled Senate that would lock in the middle-class tax cuts and raise the rates for the rich.

"If we can get a few House Republicans on board, we can pass the bill ... . I'm ready to sign it," Obama said.

Stocks rise and fall with twists in budget talks

Stocks rose modestly Thursday on hopes that a budget deal would be reached in Washington. Promising optimistic reports also sent stocks upward.

Optimism that a budget deal will be reached in Washington sent?stocks?modestly higher Thursday. A pair of economic reports also brightened the mood.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 36.71 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 13,021.82.

The?stock?market took a brief turn lower when House Speaker John Boehner said little progress was being made in budget talks in Washington. The Dow was up as much as 77 points in morning trading, turned negative as Boehner made his remarks at 11:30 a.m., then slowly recovered in the afternoon.

Investors were encouraged by several positive economic reports, including a higher estimate of third-quarter U.S. economic growth, an increase in home sales and a drop in claims for unemployment benefits.

After a meeting with Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Boehner told reporters that Democrats still haven't said which cuts they would accept to government benefit programs, suggesting a final budget deal remains a long way off. Republicans have said that they are open to increasing tax revenues as part of an agreement but only if they're accompanied by significant cuts to spending.

Investors have been closely watching the talks between the White House and Congress over the "fiscal cliff", a reference to sharp government spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to start Jan. 1 unless a deal is reached to cut the budget deficit. New developments in the talks have whipsawed the market.

"It's a headline-watching market with this fiscal cliff," said David Brown, chief market strategist of the investment research firm Sabrient Systems.

Brown says the ongoing negotiations are likely to cause the?stock?market to take sudden turns in the weeks ahead. "But things seem to be moving in the right direction," Brown said. "I don't think either party wants to get pinned with hurting the market or the economy."

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 rose 6.02 points to 1,415.95. The Nasdaq composite index gained 20.25 points to 3,012.03.

In the market for government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to 1.62 percent from 1.63 percent late Wednesday.

Stock?in Guess gained 55 cents to $25.81 after the clothing maker joined the ranks of companies pledging special dividends to shareholders before favorable tax rates on dividends expire at the end of the year. The clothing company said it will make a one-time payment of $1.20 per share on top of its regular quarterly dividend of 20 cents.

Dividends, now taxed at 15 percent, will be treated like ordinary income next year unless Congress and the White House extend current tax breaks as part of a budget deal.

The Commerce Department raised its estimate for U.S. economic growth to an annual rate of 2.7 percent in the July-through-September period. That's much better than the 2 percent rate estimated a month ago and more than twice the 1.3 percent rate logged in the three previous months.

The Labor Department also reported that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits dropped to 393,000 last week, in line with what economists had expected. It was the second straight drop after Superstorm Sandy drove applications higher earlier this month.

Target, The Gap, and others retail stores posted poor sales numbers, driving their?stocks?lower. It's a crucial time for retailers, who log a huge chunk of their yearly profits in the weeks running up to the holidays.

Among other companies making news:

? Kohl's plunged 12 percent, the biggest drop in the S&P 500 index. The company posted a drop in sales and said stores in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, areas hit by Superstorm Sandy, fared the worst. Kohl's?stocklost $6.13 to $45.02.

? Kroger Co. rose $1.19 to $26.25 after the supermarket chain reported stronger quarterly profits and raised its earnings outlook for the year. Stronger sales helped the operator of Fred Meyer and Food 4 Less stores post better results than analysts had expected.

How Cell Phone Spy Software Works - Mobile Phones Reviews ...

We are deriving many benefits from the advancements in communication technology. Particularly the growth in mobile communication sector is phenomenal. The giant strides in mobile communication have shrunk the world and the emergence of smartphones with multiple uses has enabled us to work on the move. As there are always two sides to a coin, similarly the benefits of technology are associated with certain inherent risks.

To suggest an example, online banking has allowed the convenience to carry out banking transactions at any time, be it from home or from work. The bitter side of this facility is the increased phishing attacks. To prevent such technological crimes, you need to make use of cell phone spy software. Installing such software on your cell phones will protect your phone as well as safeguard the confidential information stored in the phone.

Functioning of Cell Phone Spy Software

The cell phone spy software functions as a tracking device or a bug. It works silently in the background and records all the details of the cell phone. By installing the spy ware on a cell phone, it would commence to function as a spy phone and enable you to review all the phone?s activities. There are dozens of such cell phone monitoring spy software available in the market. Popular among them include Mobile Spy, Mobistealth, Flexispy and Stealthgenie.

    Installation of the software

To install spy software, you need to physically access the cell phone. Download your chosen spyware from its vendor website and physically install on the cell phone by following the steps outlined in the user guide. Once the installation is completed, the spy software will function stealthily and record all the activities of the cell phone and discretely transfer the same to the user account. This user account is provided at the time of purchase of the spy software. By logging into the account remotely, you can review all the recorded information.

    Location Tracking

With the help of the cell phone spy software, you can track the location of your cell phone using the embedded GPS tracking. With the help of the GPS, you can track the location of your spouse, kid or employees and know about their whereabouts.

    Calls tracking

If you suspect that your spouse is cheating on you, you can monitor his/her calls, mails and text messages using the cell phone spy software. The spy software maintains detailed logs enabling you to review all the phone?s activities. Call interception facility and spy call facility are also offered enabling you to listen in to the live conversations or place a call without detection. You can also keep a watch on your kids, teens and employees by tracking their cell phone activities. You can thus ensure the safety of your kids and identify the disloyal employees.

Remote locking and wiping of data

Installing the cell phone spy software helps in remotely locking your phone and prevents strangers from unlocking your phone. You can also wipe out your data remotely if the security of your phone is compromised.

With the rising cell phone threats, it is better to install cell phone spy software and protect oneself and family from any dangers.

French court delays Strauss-Kahn charge ruling

(AP) ? A French court has pushed back a ruling on whether to drop aggravated pimping charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former IMF chief who has successfully fought accusations linked to his "libertine" lifestyle.

The Sipa news agency reports that prosecutors say the court set a new date of Dec. 19 on Strauss-Kahn's demand to annul the charges linking him to a suspected prostitution ring run out of a luxury hotel in the northern city of Lille.

Two of the four people implicated have asked that charges be dropped.

Lawyers for Strauss-Kahn claim the investigating judges were biased.

The economist admits attending "libertine" gatherings but denies knowing that some women present were paid.

New York prosecutors dropped charges of sexual assault against Strauss-Kahn by a New York hotel maid in May 2011.

Employers Are Giving Employees the Option of Choosing their Own ...

In an effort to reduce health costs, companies are turning to defined contribution health insurance plans in which they pay their workers a fixed sum and allow them to choose their own insurance based on individual needs, says the Washington Post.

Under this defined contribution plan, a worker may choose to use their employer-provided money to put toward a company offered health plan or one they find through another insurer.

    • The average annual premium for employer-sponsored family health plans has almost doubled to nearly $16,000.
    • Companies end up paying about 70 percent of it.
    • As a result, employers have turned to allowing their workers to choose benefits tailored to their own needs, which reduces overall health care costs.
    • Now, workers that choose the company's benefit may end up paying higher costs.

For many, this is seen as a step in the right direction. Employees no longer have to pay for a plan that offers services they will never use. Instead, a worker can find a tailored health insurance plan and pay as much as they are willing to on it.

To aid the employees in finding the right health insurance plan for them, many companies are turning to online exchanges to help workers in finding the right plan for them. Many health insurers such as WellPoint, Inc., and Bloom Health are beginning to provide online exchanges so that people can shop around for the best insurance plans.

Small businesses will benefit greatly from defined contribution plans. It will help provide insurance to attract and keep workers while avoiding large premiums that are typically found in traditional plans.

Moreover, proponents say that the defined contribution approach will create competition that forces insurers to lower prices in an effort to attract more people. However, critics contend that an employer may not provide enough money to keep up with rising health insurance costs, leaving the worker to pay more out of their own pocket.

GI's treatment focus of hearing in WikiLeaks case

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) ? An Army private charged in the biggest security breach in U.S. history is trying to avoid trial by claiming he's already been punished by confinement conditions that a United Nations torture investigator called cruel, inhuman and degrading.

Pfc. Bradley Manning is expected to testify about his treatment during a pretrial hearing starting Tuesday at Fort Meade. The young intelligence analyst has never spoken publicly about his nearly nine months in the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., from July 2010 to April 2011. The hearing is scheduled to run through Sunday.

Manning was confined alone in a 6-by-8-foot cell for at least 23 hours a day, according to documents filed by the defense. For several days in January 2011, all his clothes were taken from him each night until he was issued a suicide-prevention smock, military officials have said.

The Defense Department has said Manning's treatment properly conformed to his classification as a maximum-custody detainee who posed a risk of injury to himself or others. He was moved in April 2011 to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he has a medium-security classification.

Publicity about Manning's treatment helped bring worldwide attention to his case. In March, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Juan E. Mendez presented a report to the UN's Human Rights Council in which he criticized the U.S. government for refusing his repeated requests for a private visit with Manning.

Although they never spoke, "I am persuaded that Pfc. Manning was subjected to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" in violation of the UN Convention Against Torture, Mendez wrote in a Nov. 15 email to The Associated Press.

Mendez said he doesn't know if Manning's treatment amounted to torture, as Manning supporters claim.

Military judges can dismiss all charges if pretrial punishment is particularly egregious, but that rarely happens. The usual remedy is credit at sentencing for time served, said Lisa M. Windsor, a retired Army colonel and former Army judge advocate now in private practice in Washington.

"I think the likelihood of him getting any charges dropped is extremely remote," she said.

If the military judge refuses to dismiss the case, defense attorney David Coombs has requested 10-for-1 credit for 258 days of supposedly punitive confinement. That would knock a little more than seven years off Manning's sentence if he is convicted. He faces the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted of the most serious charge, aiding the enemy, and 162 years on the 21 other counts. His trial is set to begin Feb. 4.

Jeff Paterson, a leader of the Bradley Manning Support Network, said the credit would be meaningless if Manning gets a lengthy sentence.

"If that credit is meaningless, then that signals that you can actually torture any personnel or detainee without any actual consequences," Paterson said.

Manning is accused of sending to the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

The 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., allegedly told a confidant-turned-informant in an online chat in 2010 that he leaked the information because "I want people to see the truth."

Manning has offered to take responsibility for the leak by pleading guilty to reduced charges. The military judge hasn't yet ruled on the offer. It is not part of a plea deal, and it would not preclude prosecutors from pursuing the original charges.

EUR/USD and GBP/USD maintain disposition at the beginning of ...

Last week Forex trading was done in unusual conditions. On Thursday Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in the USA.? That is why many investors began to leave the market and returned to the monitors only on Monday. Thus, Forex market became a thin market by the end of the week. High profit currency managed to avail itself of the opportunity. The euro attacked the dollar and approached to 1.3000. It was mostly caused by the expectations of Greek aid tranche which may be approved by the Ministers of Finance of the euro zone at today?s meeting. The unified currency was also supported by the reports published during the week, which mostly represented better-then-expected results. What are the perspectives of the EUR/USD currency pair for the last week of autumn? Of course, if the Greek tranche is approved, the euro will most likely continue growing and then the euro will aimed to break out above 1.3000. But we can?t rule out the possibility of another scenario. Firstly, there are no guarantees good results of today?s meeting (let?s remember Merkel?s words on disagreements over Greek problems).Secondly, even if the ministers approve the next aid tranche, it need to be approved by the Parliaments of many countries, including Germany (the Parliamentary voting will be on the 30thof November). Moreover, don?t forget about an old favorite trading rule But the Rumor, Sell the Fact. So, the EUR/USD growth may change into decline. In my opinion, it will depend on whether the euro will manage to break out above 1.3000 and will fix above this level. If it manages to do it, bull trend will remain intact. If not, the euro may lost everything it has got without difficulties in thin market. The GBP/USD currency pair also broke out last week. By the way, the pound managed to get an important technical victory: to return above key resistance ? the Gann line which begins from the summer low (which is red on the chart). It became a kind of ?restoration of justice?: after all the EUR/USD manages to hold up above the same line on its chart. Meanwhile, the UK economy doesn?t look worse than the economy of E-17! And published protocol of the last meeting of the bank of England confirmed that the quantitative easing implemented by the Central Bank is not expected this year. So, from this point of view the pound looked re-sold lately. This week the GBP/USD dynamics will depend on the fact whether this currency pair will manage to fix above achieved level. If it returns under 1.6000, it will create a threat to downward movement.

Crisis over president's powers exposes Egypt divisions

CAIRO (Reuters) - Youths clashed with police in Cairo on Saturday as protests at new powers assumed by President Mohamed Mursi stretched into a second day, confronting Egypt with a crisis that has exposed the split between newly empowered Islamists and their opponents.

A handful of hardcore activists hurling rocks battled riot police in the streets near Tahrir Square, where several thousand protesters massed on Friday to demonstrate against a decree that has rallied opposition ranks against Mursi.

Following a day of violence in Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said and Suez, the smell of teargas hung over the square, the heart of the uprising that swept Hosni Mubarak from power in February 2011.

More than 300 people were injured on Friday. Offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Mursi to power, were attacked in at least three cities.

Egypt's highest judicial authority said the decree marked an "unprecedented attack" on the independence of the judiciary, the state news agency reported.

Leftist, liberal and socialist parties have called for an open-ended sit-in with the aim of "toppling" the decree which has also drawn statements of concern from the United States and the European Union. A few dozen activists manning makeshift barricades kept traffic out of the square on Saturday.

Calling the decree "fascist and despotic", Mursi's critics called for a big protest on Tuesday against a move they say has revealed the autocratic impulses of a man jailed by Mubarak, who outlawed Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood.

"We are facing a historic moment in which we either complete our revolution or we abandon it to become prey for a group that has put its narrow party interests above the national interest," the liberal Dustour Party said in a statement.

Issued late on Thursday, the decree marks an effort by the Mursi administration to consolidate its influence after it successfully sidelined Mubarak-era generals in August.

The decree reflects the Muslim Brotherhood's suspicion towards sections of a judiciary unreformed from Mubarak's days: it guards from judicial review decisions taken by Mursi until a new parliament is elected in a vote expected early next year.

It also shields the assembly writing Egypt's new constitution from a raft of legal challenges that have threatened the Islamist-dominated assembly with dissolution.

The Mursi administration has defended the decree on the grounds that it aims to speed up a protracted transition from Mubarak's rule to a new system of democratic government.

"It aims to sideline Mursi's enemies in the judiciary and ultimately to impose and head off any legal challenges to the constitution," said Elijah Zarwan, a fellow with The European Council on Foreign Relations.

"We are in a situation now where both sides are escalating and its getting harder and harder to see how either side can gracefully climb down," Zarwan said.

    "INTIFADA"

A central element of Egypt's transition, the drafting of the constitution has been plagued by divisions between Islamists and their more secular-minded opponents, nearly all of whom have withdrawn from the body writing the document.

Mursi's new powers allowed him to replace the prosecutor general - a Mubarak holdover who the new president had tried to replace in October only to kick up a storm of protest from the judiciary, which said he had exceeded his authorities.

At an emergency meeting called to discuss the decree, the Supreme Judicial Council, Egypt's highest judicial authority, urged "the president of the republic to distance this decree from everything that violates the judicial authority".

Al-Masry Al-Youm, one of Egypt's most widely read dailies, hailed Friday's protest as "The November 23 Intifada", invoking the Arabic word for uprising. "The people support the president's decisions," declared Freedom and Justice, the newspaper run by the Brotherhood's political party.

The ultraorthodox Salafi Islamist groups that have been pushing for tighter application of Islamic law in the new constitution have rallied behind the decree.

The Nour Party, one such group, stated its support for the Mursi decree. Al-Gama'a al-Islamiya, which carried arms against the state in the 1990s, said it would save the revolution from what it described as remnants of the Mubarak regime.

Facing the biggest storm of criticism since he won the presidential election in June, Mursi addressed his supporters outside the presidential palace on Friday. He said opposition did not worry him, but it had to be "real and strong".

Candidates defeated by Mursi in the presidential vote joined the protests against his decision on Friday. Former Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa was photographed linking arms with leftist Hamdeen Sabahi, liberal Mohamed ElBaradei and others.

Mursi is now confronted with a domestic crisis just as his administration won international praise for mediating an end to the eight-day war between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

"The decisions and declarations announced on November 22 raise concerns for many Egyptians and for the international community," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement.

The European Union urged Mursi to respect the democratic process, while the United Nations expressed fears about human rights.

New molecular culprit linked to breast cancer progression

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? Johns Hopkins researchers have uncovered a protein "partner" commonly used by breast cancer cells to unlock genes needed for spreading the disease around the body. A report on the discovery, published November 5 on the website of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, details how some tumors get the tools they need to metastasize.

"We've identified a protein that wasn't known before to be involved in breast cancer progression," says Gregg Semenza, M.D., Ph.D., the C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of the Vascular Program at Hopkins' Institute for Cell Engineering. "The protein JMJD2C is the key that opens up a whole suite of genes needed for tumors to grow and metastasize, so it represents a potential target for cancer drug development."

Semenza and his colleagues made their finding when they traced the activity of HIF-1, a protein known to switch on hundreds of genes involved in development, red blood cell production, and metabolism in normal cells. Previous studies had shown that HIF-1 could also be hijacked to switch on genes needed to make breast tumors more malignant.

Would-be tumor cells face a host of challenges as they make the transition from working with their host to working against it, such as the need to evade the immune system and to produce more cancer cells, explains Weibo Luo, Ph.D., an instructor in the Institute for Cell Engineering and Department of Biological Chemistry who led the project. All of these efforts require switching on the right genes for the job.

To learn more about how HIF-1 works, the researchers tested a range of human proteins to see whether they would interact with HIF-1. They then sifted through the 200 resulting hits, looking for proteins involved in chemical changes to sections of DNA that determine whether or not the genes they contain are available for use. "In order for HIF-1 to switch genes on, they have to be available, but many of the genes HIF-1 activates are normally locked down in mature cells," explains Luo. "So we thought HIF-1 must have a partner that can do the unlocking."

That partner turned out to be JMJD2C, Luo says. Delving deeper, the researchers found that HIF-1 switches on the JMJD2C gene, stimulating production of the protein. HIF-1's presence also enables JMJD2C to bind to DNA at other HIF-1 target genes, then loosen those DNA sections, enabling more HIF-1 to bind to the same sites and activate the target genes.

To test the implications of their discovery, the research team injected mice with breast cancer cells in which the JMJD2C protein was not produced. Tumors with depleted JMJD2C were much less likely to grow and metastasize to the lungs, confirming the protein's role in breast cancer progression, says Luo.

"Active HIF proteins have been found in many types of tumors, so the implications of this finding go beyond breast cancer," says Luo. "JMJD2C is both an important piece of the puzzle of how tumors metastasize, and a potential target for anti-cancer therapy." Other authors of the research report are Ryan Chang, Jun Zhong, Ph.D., and Akhilesh Pandey, M.D., Ph.D., all of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

This work was supported by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (contracts N01-HV28180 and HHS-N268201000032C), and by funds from the Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering.

The Weal ? Stay-at-home dads adjust to modern parenting

The Weal ? NewsBeing a stay-at-home parent can be a tough but challenging experience. Traditionally, it has been the woman who stays home to raise the children, but there are an increasing number of men who now take on that role.

James Knibbe has been a stay at home dad for the past six years, since his daughter was six months old. Knibbe has raised his daughter, who just started grade one this year, and his step-son, who just turned 11.

Knibbe was working full-time at Nexen Inc. and agreed to quit and stay home full-time. He and his wife Rose felt it was better for one parent to be at home to raise the children and Rose wanted to join her family?s automotive repair business.

Knibbe thinks the best thing about being a stay-at-home dad is all the free time he gets. He doesn?t feel the need to fill up every hour of the day doing chores, and he enjoys the time he gets to read or complete DIY projects around the house.

On the flipside Knibbe said, ?I see my kids and their friends lots. I colour and watch Disney movies with them, and then I put them to bed and realize I have not had a single sentence of communication with an adult all day.?

The work of parenting, according to Knibbe, is more repetitive than challenging and each day can blend into a list of menial tasks that are done over and over again. He believes most men equate their own worth with their accomplishments and it can be difficult and demoralizing for him at times to watch others get promotions and achieve tangible success.

?Not to say I don?t find meaning and value in what I have done. I can see growth in my children, in my relationship with my wife, and in me as a person,? commented Knibbe.

While Knibbe remains the primary care-giver, now that his daughter is in school he has been working from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at his wife?s family business. After six years away he knows he has lost out on making any use of his education and is not certain he wants to return to work full-time at this point.

Knibbe admitted, ?It is nice to feel productive and have my days filled up again.?

Knibbe and his wife did not simply contradict tradition with him being the parent to stay at home and raise the children. Knibbe also dropped his last name and took his wife?s name.

?Since she had a child already, it was easiest to change my last name rather than both of theirs,? Knibbe said.

Barbara Hayward, a first-year administrative information management student, agrees there is certainly the possibility of a woman having the potential to make more money than her husband, such that it would make financial sense for her to work and him to stay at home.

?Personally though, I am more traditional and the idea puts me off,? said Hayward.

Hayward also would not want the man to change his last name to hers and would follow the more traditional route of changing her own.

Mike Balczer, a second-year electrical engineering technology student, was a stay-at-home dad for three years before he came to SAIT. His son?s are now 7 and 10 years old and still complain that he is no longer at home with them full-time.

With Balczer at SAIT full-time and his wife working, they have less time to make home cooked meals. Their children felt it was more fun with dad at home and the food was better.

Balczer and his wife both kept their original last names and their children have a hyphenated names. Balczer feels that changing one?s name is a personal preference and depends on the circumstances.

Balczer said, ?If I could get paid to stay at home with the kids there would be no other job, even if it was bad pay.?

Carpe Twitter: Vatican tweets on new Latin academy

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A senior Vatican cardinal tweeted in Latin on Wednesday to urge people to attend the inauguration of, you guessed it, the Holy's See's new Academy for Latin Studies.

"Hodie una cum Ivano Dionigi novam aperiemus academiam pontificiam latinitatis a Benedicto conditam, hora XVII, via Conciliationis V," was the tweet by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi.

The approximate translation: "Today at 5 p.m., along with Ivano Dionigi, we will open the new Pontifical Academy for Latin Studies founded by Benedict. Via della Conciliazione, 5."

It was not the first tweet in Latin - an Italian professor has been doing it for some time - but evidently Ravasi wanted to seize the day, or "carpe diem".

The pope earlier this month announced that he had instituted the Pontifical Academy for Latin Studies, placing it under the auspices of the Vatican's ministry for culture.

Dionigi, a Latin scholar who is rector of Bologna University - widely recognised to be the world's oldest - is the academy's first president.

The pope started the academy to promote the study and use of Latin in the Roman Catholic Church and beyond.

When instituting the academy, the pope said Latin, which is still the official language of the universal Church, was the subject of renewed interest around the world and the academy was mandated to encourage further growth.

Weak muscles in teen years linked to early death in men - 8 News ...

TUESDAY, Nov. 20 (HealthDay News) -- Men who had low muscle strength during their teen years are at increased risk for early death from several major causes, a new study contends.

The researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that, for men, the effect of having low muscle strength in youth was similar to the well-known risk factors for early death such as being overweight or having high blood pressure.

The findings point to the need for young people, particularly those with very low strength, to get regular exercise to improve their muscular fitness, the study authors said in the report, published in the Nov. 20 online edition of the BMJ.

The study included more than 1 million Swedish males aged 16 to 19 who were followed for 24 years. The participants underwent strength tests at the start of the study. Early death was defined as death before age 55.

During the follow-up, 2.3 percent (more than 26,000) of the men died. The most common cause of death was suicide (22 percent), while cancer accounted for nearly 15 percent of deaths and cardiovascular diseases caused just less than 8 percent of deaths, the investigators found.

Adults who had high muscular strength as teens had a 20 percent to 35 percent lower risk of early death from any cause and also from cardiovascular diseases, independently of blood pressure or body-mass index (a measurement of fat based on height and weight), the results indicated.

In addition, those who were the strongest as teens also had a 20 percent to 30 percent lower risk of early death from suicide and were 65 percent less likely to be diagnosed with a mental health disorder, such as schizophrenia or mood disorders.

When the researchers looked at death rates from any cause, the rates ranged from 122.3 per 100,000 person years for those with the lowest muscle strength and 86.9 per 100,000 person years for those with the greatest muscle strength. Death rates for cardiovascular diseases were 9.5 and 5.6 per 100,000 person years, respectively, and for suicide were 24.6 and 16.9 per 100,000 person years, respectively.

The findings suggest that lower muscle strength in teens "is an emerging risk factor for major causes of death in young adulthood, such as suicide and cardiovascular diseases," study author Finn Rasmussen and colleagues concluded in a journal news release.

The results also point to the importance of exercise for children and teens, the authors noted.

The study found an association between low muscle strength during teen years and early death in men; it did not prove cause-and-effect.

Algae can take energy from other plants

ScienceDaily (Nov. 20, 2012) ? Flowers need water and light to grow. Even children learn that plants use sunlight to gather energy from earth and water. Members of Professor Dr. Olaf Kruse's biological research team at Bielefeld University have made a groundbreaking discovery that one plant has another way of doing this. They have confirmed for the first time that a plant, the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, not only engages in photosynthesis, but also has an alternative source of energy: it can draw it from other plants. This finding could also have a major impact on the future of bioenergy.

The research findings have been released on November 20 in the online journal Nature Communications.

Until now, it was believed that only worms, bacteria, and fungi could digest vegetable cellulose and use it as a source of carbon for their growth and survival. Plants, in contrast, engage in the photosynthesis of carbon dioxide, water, and light. In a series of experiments, Professor Dr. Olaf Kruse and his team cultivated the microscopically small green alga species Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in a low carbon dioxide environment and observed that when faced with such a shortage, these single-cell plants can draw energy from neighbouring vegetable cellulose instead.

The alga secretes enzymes (so-called cellulose enzymes) that 'digest' the cellulose, breaking it down into smaller sugar components. These are then transported into the cells and transformed into a source of energy: the alga can continue to grow.

'This is the first time that such a behaviour has been confirmed in a vegetable organism', says Professor Kruse. 'That algae can digest cellulose contradicts every previous textbook. To a certain extent, what we are seeing is plants eating plants'. Currently, the scientists are studying whether this mechanism can also be found in other types of alga. Preliminary findings indicate that this is the case.

In the future, this 'new' property of algae could also be of interest for bioenergy production. Breaking down vegetable cellulose biologically is one of the most important tasks in this field. Although vast quantities of waste containing cellulose are available from, for example, field crops, it cannot be transformed into biofuels in this form. Cellulose enzymes first have to break down the material and process it. At present, the necessary cellulose enzymes are extracted from fungi that, in turn, require organic material in order to grow. If, in future, cellulose enzymes can be obtained from algae, there would be no more need for the organic material to feed the fungi. Then even when it is confirmed that algae can use alternative nutrients, water and light suffice for them to grow in normal conditions.

Dot Earth Blog: Mapping Gas Leaks from Boston's Aging Urban Pipes

Most concerns about environmental impacts and other risks from leaking natural gas have focused on the fast-expanding production end of America?s vast system of wells, compressors and pipelines. But the urban maze of (often ancient) pipes that carries gas to furnaces and stoves has long been known to be leaking, as well.

Earlier this year, to take a snapshot of this problem, scientists from Boston University and Duke University took equipment that detects methane ? the main constituent of natural gas ? on a 785-mile van ride through Boston?s streets. The result, published today in the journal Environmental Pollution, is a map showing more than 3,300 spikes in gas concentrations representing leaks of various sizes. [I'll add a direct link soon.]

My friend Beth Daley of the Boston Globe has a thorough piece on the findings that is well worth reading. Most of the leaks are minor, but some could pose an explosion risk and they add up to a lot of lost money and an unnecessary source of greenhouse gas emissions. [10:55 a.m. | Updated Joanna Foster has more details on the Green Blog.]

I posed some questions to the lead researcher, Nathan Phillips of Boston University, and you can see his responses below.

To go deeper, I recommend a thorough 2009 report in Pipeline and Gas Journal on gas leaks from our antiquated distribution system. Here?s one telling nugget from the article:

Fugitive methane emissions from distribution mains account for 32 percent of methane emissions from the U.S. natural gas distribution sector. Cast iron pipelines contribute the most to these emissions, despite representing only 3 percent of the miles of the U.S. distribution mains.

This situation is deeply reminiscent of similar issues with leaky old water mains ? some are a century old ? in aging cities.

It takes money to fix such problems. Tokyo has become a global leader in stanching water leaks, for example. A core component of that fix has been costly stainless steel pipes. Updating invisible infrastructure also takes a culture shift.

Studies like the one in Boston ? revealing the invisible waste ? can go a long way toward building the motivation for change. (This is also one reason I like the use of infrared imagery to spot possible gas leaks from drilling sites and pipelines.) Here?s a closeup image of some Boston?s distribution-system leakage:

Here?s are responses from Nathan Phillips to a couple of questions (with some e-mail shorthand fleshed out). Pose your own and I?ll send them to the authors.

    Q.

Did you get any estimates of volume escaping per unit of time?

    A.

It?s too soon. But we know from just dozens of chamber measurements that some of the leaks can exceed daily U.S. household usage (200 cubic feet a day). I think the distribution is skewed with a long tail ? many small leaks, and a few really big ones.

    Q.

The relationship to ancient cast iron mains speaks volumes about our infrastructure issues in this country.

    A.

There is a term that geographers and urban planners are using now called infrastructure ecology, to describe the interdependency of our infastructures, relating to resilience, vulnerabilities. It provides a good framework for thinking about how we approach spatially co-located infrastructures. We should be replacing underground infrastructure when we are already repaving streets, rather than addressing one infrastructure in isolation of the others. It would save a lot of money.

Here?s a view from the ?cockpit? during their Boston leak-detection tour:
