Comeback complete, Europe wins Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Erasing some of their worst Ryder Cup memories, the Europeans wore the image of Seve Ballesteros on their sleeves and played their hearts out Sunday at Medinah to match the greatest comeback in history and head home with that precious gold trophy.

Europe got its payback for Brookline, when the Americans roared back from the same 10-6 deficit. This rally was even more remarkable, carried out before a raucous American crowd that began their chants of "USA!" some three hours before the first match got under way.

Jose Maria Olazabal squeezed his eyes and fought back tears when Kaymer holed a 6-foot par putt to beat Steve Stricker and give Europe the point it needed to keep the cup. This was the first Ryder Cup since Ballesteros, the soul of European golf in this event, died last May of a brain tumor. Olazabal wanted his team to wear navy blue, Seve's favorite color, and added a clever touch ? his iconic silhouette on the sleeves of their shirts.

"This one is for all of Europe," Olazabal said. "Seve will always be present with this team. He was a big factor for this event for the European side, and last night when we were having that meeting, I think the boys understood that believing was the most important thing. And I think they did."

Tiger Woods missed a 3?-foot par putt on the 18th hole, and then conceded a par to Francesco Molinari of about that length to halve their match. That extra half-point made it a clear-cut win for Europe, 14?-13?.

Woods and Stricker, the anchors in the lineup, didn't win a single match at Medinah.

Ian Poulter was the first to embrace Olazabal, which was only fitting.

It was Poulter who gave Europe hope Saturday evening when he made five straight birdies to turn a loss into a win and swing momentum in Europe's favor. Poulter was up to his fist-pumping, eye-bulging tricks again on the final day, winning the last two holes in his match against U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson.

And he had plenty of help. Europe's top five players in the lineup all won, including Rory McIlroy, who was lucky to be playing. McIlroy thought his match was at 12:25 p.m. ? it was listed in Eastern time, not Central ? and needed a police escort to get to the course with 10 minutes to spare. Then, he came up with key birdies to hand Keegan Bradley his first loss of the week.

The biggest match might have belonged to Justin Rose. He was on the verge of losing to Phil Mickelson when Rose holed a 12-foot par putt to halve the 16th, made a 35-foot birdie putt from the back of the 17th green to win the hole, and then closed out Mickelson with a 12-foot birdie on the last hole.

Six of the 12 matches went to the 18th hole on Sunday. The Americans won only one of them.

The Americans also rallied from a four-point deficit to win in 1999 at Brookline. This was different, though. The Americans won big in those early matches. At Medinah, so many of them could have gone either way.

It was so close, so tense, that either side could have won the Ryder Cup down to the very end.

Stricker made an 8-foot par putt on the 18th, and Kaymer faced a par putt from 6 feet to win the match. If he missed, the Americans would get a half-point, and Woods was leading 1-up over Molinari and in the middle of the 18th fairway.

Kaymer, a former No. 1 and major champion who has struggled all year, poured it in the middle and the celebration was on.

He could barely speak at this point, not so much from pure emotion but having to scream over the crowd behind him. Players were hugging and crying, and the small European contingent that had been drowned out all week was serenading themselves with what has become the theme song of the Ryder Cup.

"Ole, ole, ole, ole," they sang merrily, even as the teams prepared for the closing ceremony.

Europe now has won seven of the last nine Ryder Cups, and even more remarkable about this comeback is that they did it on the road.

Davis Love III became the first U.S. captain to sit every player at least once before Sunday, wanting them to be fresh for the decisive day. Instead, the Americans faltered at the end ? especially Jim Furyk and Stricker, two of his captain's picks.

"The plan worked the first two days," he said. "It just didn't work today."

The only U.S. points came from Dustin Johnson, who went 3-0 in this Ryder Cup, Zach Johnson and unheralded Jason Dufner.

"We're all kind of stunned," Love said. "We know what it feels like now from the '99 Ryder Cup. It's a little bit shocking. We were playing so well, we figured it didn't matter how we sent them out there. We got a couple of matches flipped there in the middle that cost us."

Love thought all along the Ryder Cup would be decided in the ninth match by Dufner. It was most appropriate that Europe won the cup thanks to Kaymer.

Kaymer gave German golf some redemption from Kiawah Island in 1991, when countryman Bernhard Langer missed a par putt from about the same length that allowed the Americans to win.

"It's a feeling I never had before," Kaymer said. "On Friday, I sat down with Bernhard and talked a little bit about the Ryder Cup because my attitude was not the right one. But now I know how important the Ryder Cup is."

Afghan inside attack kills 2 Americans, 2 Afghans

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops at a checkpoint in the country's east, killing two Americans and two fellow members of Afghanistan's army in a shooting that marked both the continuance of a disturbing trend of insider attacks and the 2,000th U.S. troop death in the long-running war, officials said Sunday.

The string of insider attacks is one of the greatest threats to NATO's mission in the country, endangering a partnership key to training up Afghan security forces and withdrawing international troops.

Saturday's shooting took place at an Afghan army checkpoint just outside a joint U.S.-Afghan base in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman. At least two Afghan soldiers died, he said.

"Initial reports indicate that a misunderstanding happened between Afghan army soldiers and American soldiers," Shahid said. He said investigators had been sent to the site to try to figure out what happened. It was not clear if the assailant was killed.

The attack happened about 5 p.m. in Sayd Abad district, Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said in an emailed statement. He did not provide further details.

NATO forces announced the assault early Sunday morning, saying only that it was "suspected insider attack" and that a NATO service member and civilian contractor were killed.

One U.S. official confirmed that the service member killed was American, while another confirmed that the civilian was also American. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of the dead had not yet been formally announced.

Afghan soldiers and policemen ? or militants in their uniforms ? have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. An equal number of Afghan policemen and soldiers also died in these attacks, giving them reason as well to be suspicious of possible infiltrators within their ranks.

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership between international and Afghan forces, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month.

The close contact ? with coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers ? is a key part of the U.S. strategy for preparing the Afghans to take the lead in security operations as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops at the end of 2014, just 27 months away.

The number of American military dead reflects an Associated Press count of those members of the armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001.

CORRECTED-UPDATE 5-Spain debt rises on aid to banks, regions, finance cost

Sun Sep 30, 2012 10:33am BST

(Corrects to note that Brussels has declined to comment on the draft budget)

* Spain details cuts to health, education

* Debt-to-GDP ratio to rise to 90.5 percent by end-2013

* Budget deficit rises to 7.4 percent including bank aid

* Gross debt issuance rises to 207.2 billion euros in 2013

By Andr?s Gonz?lez

MADRID, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Spain's debt levels are set to rise next year, piling pressure on the government to apply for aid as it pours funds in to cash-strapped regions, an ailing banking system and rising refinancing costs, its budget showed on Saturday.

Spain's debt as a ratio of gross domestic product will reach 90.5 percent by end 2013, according to the document presented to parliament for approval, almost three times that registered before the property bubble burst in 2008.

The budget aims to make savings of around 13 billion euros ($16.7 billion) next year, largely by deepening already unpopular cuts in public sector wages, education, health and social services, fuelling anti-austerity protests.

"This is an austerity budget, but will serve to help us get over this long economic crisis and once again show that Spain is a trustworthy partner within Europe," Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro told journalists after delivering the budget.

Spain is at the centre of the euro zone debt crisis as nervous investors demand ever higher premiums to hold Spanish debt on concerns that the government cannot control its finances in the midst of a deepening recession.

Calls by wealthy northeastern region Catalonia for independence and the rising number of demonstrations on the streets of major cities have stoked doubts that Spain can fix its problems without help.

Thousands of protesters gathered on Saturday in Madrid's Neptune plaza, between the Prado Museum and Parliament, for a third time this week to vent anger at politicians they accuse of pillaging the welfare state to bail out badly-run banks.

"This has to change. We have to show them we are not an anti-system minority but represent Spain's discontent and we are many. You only have to see the unemployment rate to see that," said state school teacher, Montse, 44, who was at the march with her unemployed husband and 11-year-old daughter.

Unemployment in Spain is more than double the European Union average, with half of all working-age under-26s unable to find jobs and shattered businesses laying off employees they cannot afford to pay.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has delayed any plea for aid, which would kick-start a European Central Bank plan to buy debt and ease financing costs, though this week has passed reforms and the budget plan in what many see is an effort to pre-empt the likely terms of a bailout.

Rajoy, who said he is considering the conditions behind any aid request, is widely expected to wait until after regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Country before taking any decision.

RISING BORROWING NEEDS

The budget details spending cuts of 3.1 percent in health, 14.4 percent in education and 6.3 percent in unemployment benefits, as the recession, which began in the first quarter, drags on.

Spain will also slash state funding to commerce, tourism and small and medium-sized companies by 18.8 percent and infrastructure by 13.5 percent.

The government will increase its reliance on international markets for funding next year, with gross debt issuance requirements of 207.2 billion euros, after budgeting in 2012 for gross issuance of 186.1 billion euros.

The cost of financing its debt, as benchmark 10-year bond yields rise to near unsustainable levels of above 6 percent, is expected to increase to 38.6 billion euros, or 3.6 percent of GDP, in 2013, the budget showed.

The Treasury must pay debt redemptions of 159.2 billion euros in 2013, up slightly from 153.2 billion euros in 2012.

The increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio was due to the economic crisis and the effect of state instruments on public accounts, the Treasury said in the document.

The instruments include the power deficit bond programme, FADE, the service provider fund for regional governments, Spain's part in aid granted to Ireland, Greece and Portugal and the recapitalisation loan for the country's banks, it said.

Brussels on Thursday said that Spain's detailed timetable for economic reforms goes beyond what the European Commission has asked of Spain and is an ambitious step forward, though it has declined to comment on the draft budget at this stage.

Many economists expressed doubt that Spain's conservatives would be able to raise the cash the budget demanded as pension and debt-servicing costs rise.

"My general view is that this is an optimistic budget, in the sense that predictions for the contraction in 2013 are very optimistic," said Xavier Vives, economist at business school IESE, adding that he expected the plans to be revised, as with every other budget over the past four years.

The budget is based on the assumption that GDP will shrink by 0.5 percent in 2013 year-on-year, though most economists expect a deeper slump.

DEFICIT JUMP

Spain will meet its 2012 public deficit target as dictated by European guidelines, Montoro said, but the shortfall will jump by more than one percentage point if aid to its struggling banks were taken in to account.

The Spanish deficit this year would be 6.3 percent of GDP, not including these payments to its banks, he said, but would rise to 9.4 percent of GDP last year and 7.4 percent of GDP this year if the aid was considered.

"Everything within the deficit derived from financial operations aren't included ... they're considered one-offs," Montoro said.

Spain has asked for up to 100 billion euros for its crisis-hit banks, though the debate among Spain's European partners rages over whether that money would go directly to its lenders or first via public coffers.

On Friday, an independent report showed that Spanish banks will need up to 59.3 billion euros in extra capital to ride out the economic downturn.

The budget details on Saturday showed Spain's debt ratio included 30 billion euros of the planned 100-billion-euro aid request for the country's banks.

Lawsuit: Pentagon denied rape victims their rights

By Jeff Black, NBC News

Nineteen veterans and active-duty service members from the Army and Air Force allege in a new lawsuit filed Friday that they were sexually assaulted while in the military and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and other leaders denied them their constitutional rights of due process after reporting the crimes.

The suit seeks monetary damages, though no precise figure was named. It is the fifth lawsuit of its kind filed by Susan Burke, a Washington, D.C.-based attorney.

The 15 women and four men named in the suit were all retaliated against after reporting rapes and were denied the right to have their cases heard by an impartial party, Burke said. In the military, senior commanders are in charge of determining whether reported sexual assaults will be referred to military courts.

?Anyone who has looked closely at these types of cases knows that we have a disgraceful system,? Burke told NBC News. ?It is controlled by the chain of command. These rape survivors were all denied entry into a court system, and they were retaliated against.?

While each case has different facts on the time and place of the assault, they demonstrate a pattern of a systematic failure of leadership and oversight, Burke said, explaining why Panetta is named in the suit.

The lawsuit filed Friday comes on the heels of a rare case of an Army general being charged with sexual assault and a scandal at Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, Texas, in which at least in which at least a dozen military instructors are accused of sexually assaulting young female recruits.

Army Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair, who has served 27 years, including tours of Afghanistan and Iraq, on Wednesday was charged with forced sex on a subordinate and other offenses. He was relieved of his duty in May and recalled to Fort Bragg, N.C., where the charges were referred to military investigators.

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., joined a news conference in San Francisco announcing the new lawsuit.

In November 2011, Speier introduced legislation in Congress to reform the military justice system and the way it handles cases of rape and sexual assault. H.R. 3435, the Sexual Assault Training and Oversight Prevention Act (STOP Act), would create an impartial office made up of civilian and military experts within the military to review cases of rape and sexual assault. The bill has 133 bipartisan cosponsors.

For his part, Panetta has moved to change how sexual assaults are reported and dealt with inside the armed forces. In April, he issued new policies requiring that more senior commanders handle sexual assault complaints. And on Tuesday he ordered all military branches to improve the quality of sexual assault prevention and training.

However, Burke, and activists claim those moves fall short.

"This has been going on for years," Burke said. "Clearly, keeping these cases inside the military system isn't working." ??

Electrons confined inside nano-pyramids

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Quantum dots are nanostructures of semiconducting materials that behave a lot like single atoms and are very easy to produce. Given their special properties, researchers see huge potential for quantum dots in technological applications. Before this can happen, however, we need a better understanding of how the electrons "trapped" inside them behave. Dresden physicists have recently observed how electrons in individual quantum dots absorb energy and emit it again as light.

Their results were recently published in the journal Nano Letters.

Quantum dots look like miniscule pyramids. Inside each of these nano-pyramids are always only one or two electrons that essentially "feel" the constricting walls around them and are therefore tightly constrained in their mobility. Scientists from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Dresden. TU Dresden and the Leibniz Institute for solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) have now studied the special energy states of the electrons trapped inside individual quantum dots.

Sharp energy levels

The behaviour of electrons in a material essentially determines its properties. Being spatially constrained in all three spatial dimensions, electrons inside a nano-pyramid can only occupy very specific energy levels -- which is why quantum dots are also called "artificial atoms." Where these energy levels lie depends on the chemical composition of the semiconductor material as well as the size of the nano-pyramid. "These sharply defined energy levels are exploited, for example, in highly energy-efficient lasers based on quantum dots. The light is produced when an electron drops from a higher energy level into a lower one. The energy difference between the two levels determines the colour of the light," Dr. Stephan Winnerl of HZDR explains.

Seeing electrons inside individual quantum dots

The researchers in Dresden working with Dr. Winnerl were recently the first to succeed in scanning transitions between energy levels in single quantum dots using infrared light. Although, they could only do this after overcoming a certain hurdle: While the pyramids of indium arsenide or indium gallium arsenide form spontaneously during a specific mode of crystal growth, their size varies within a certain range. Studying them with infrared light, for example, one obtains blurred signals because electrons in different sized pyramids respond to different infrared energies. This is why it is so important to obtain a detailed view of the electrons trapped inside a single quantum dot.

The scientists approached this task with the special method of scanning near-field microscopy. Laser light is shone onto a metallic tip less than 100 nanometers thick, which strongly collimates the light to a hundred times smaller than the wavelength of light, which is the spatial resolution limit for "conventional" optics using lenses and mirrors. By focusing this collimated light precisely onto one pyramid, energy is donated to the electrons, thereby exciting them to a higher energy level. This energy transfer can be measured by watching the infrared light scattered from the tip in this process. While near-field microscopy involves major signal losses, the light beam is still strong enough to excite the electrons inside a nano-pyramid. The method is also so sensitive that it can create a nanoscale image in which the one or two electrons inside a quantum dot stand out in clear contrast. In this fashion, Stephan Winnerl and his colleagues from HZDR, plus physicists from TU and IFW Dresden, studied the behaviour of electrons inside a quantum dot in great detail, thereby contributing towards our understanding of them.

Infrared light from the free electron laser

The infrared light used in the experiments came from the free electron laser at HZDR. This special laser is an ideal infrared radiation source for such experiments because the energy of its light can be adjusted to precisely match the energy level inside the quantum dots. The laser also delivers such intense radiation that it more than makes up for the unavoidable losses inherent to the method.

"Next, we intend to reveal the behaviour of electrons inside quantum dots at lower temperatures," Dr. Winnerl says. "From these experiments, we hope to gain even more precise insights into the confined behavior of these electrons. In particular, we want to gain a much better understanding of how the electrons interact with one another as well as with the vibrations of the crystal lattice." Thanks to its intense laser flashes in a broad, freely selectable spectral range, the free electron laser offers ideal conditions for the method of near-field microscopy in Dresden, which benefits particularly from the close collaboration with Prof. Lukas Eng of TU Dresden in the scope of DRESDEN-concept.

The art and fear of public speaking ? The Native Son

September 27, 2012

This afternoon I?m giving a departmental journal club. This is where I find a scientific article and present it by dissecting, analyzing and critiquing the data. I feel pretty good about my talk. I?ve been preparing for it all week so I?m confident that I?ll do a good job.

There was a time where I dreaded speaking in public. In high school and college I hated standing in front of a class or being put on the spot. Things started changing around the second semester of my junior year or college. During that time I was pledging my fraternity while campaigning for the crown of Mr. University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Going through the pledging process gave me a lot of confidence. Also, while campaigning I had to talk at various events around campus. We also had a pageant where I had to swallow my fears. I had to perform a talent as well as answer questions on the different topics. I finished pledging (not by the end of that semester) and I won that crown.

I thought I had overcome my fears but that would shortly be tested. That next semester I had to prepare for coronation. This is a big event on campus where the Miss and Mr. are presented to the campus. The production is huge. I forget our budget but it was large considering we had a horse and carriage, fireworks and am assortment of other things. During one part of the event I had to write a speech and give it to the audience. Speaking in front of a crowd that large was very nerve racking. I did it though.

Last year I gave my thesis defense to a crowd of about 70-80 people and it wasn?t that I was nervous about size of the crowd. I was more so concerned that I would be speaking for over an hour in a subject that I was expected to be an expert. Although I had spent seven years in school I was still worried someone would ask me the simplest question and I would draw a blank. I got through that too.

Now I have a different challenge all together. In October I will be traveling to an international conference where I was selected to give an oral presentation on my research. I?ve presented at international conferences before but they have all been poster presentations. These allow more one on one interactions. I?ll be speaking to an audience from 500-600 people. Although I?ve talked to audiences that size (my coronation) it wasn?t on a subject that I was expected to be an expert (my thesis defense). Also, I only have 15 minutes (with 5 min of questions) to get a whole year of research across.

I?m feeling nervous like I?m in high school and early college again. I hope I can get through this as well.

Eliminating Invasive Cervical Cancer Possible, Moffitt Cancer Center ...

? Cervical Cancer news ? Sep 27, 2012

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of South Florida and The Ohio State University have published a paper in the September issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention that provides an overview on preventing invasive cervical cancer.

?The good news is that over the past several decades, the incidence of invasive cervical cancer has declined dramatically,? said senior author Anna R. Giuliano, Ph.D., director of Moffitt?s Center for Infection Research in Cancer and senior member of the Cancer Epidemiology Department. ?The bad news is that 60 percent of invasive cervical cancers occur in women who are members of underserved racial or ethnic minorities, in women residing in rural areas or living in poverty.?

The incidence of invasive cervical cancer has declined 75 percent since the 1940s. According to the authors, rates have decreased from 14.8 per 100,000 women in 1975 to 6.6 per 100,000 in 2008. Credit for the decline is given to the more widespread use of the Pap smear.

The number of current cases of invasive cervical cancer varies by race and ethnicity, geography, and socioeconomic status. For Hispanics, the incidence of invasive cervical cancer is 10.4 per 100,000, higher than any other group. Among blacks 85 and older, the incidence is three times higher than white women in the same age group.

?In looking across the nation, there are geographic and socioeconomic disparities associated with invasive cervical cancer rates,? noted lead author Christine M. Pierce Campbell, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow within Moffitt?s Cancer Epidemiology Department. ?Along the U.S.-Mexico border, in the deep South and in Appalachia, rates are higher than in other regions of the nation. Also, many studies have shown that socioeconomic status predicts who gets screened, diagnosed and treated for invasive cervical cancer, regardless of race and ethnicity.?

Giuliano, Pierce Campbell and their co-authors also note that federal and local funding of prevention programs, such as the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, the only nationwide screening program, has helped reduce incidence. Although the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program was implemented to promote screening among high-risk and low-income women, the program has historically served few of the women eligible for the service. The numbers of those taking advantage of the service vary by state, but between 2004 and 2006, only 8.7 percent of women eligible for screening received it, the authors said.

Important Facts About Cervical Cancer
? Cervical cancer can usually be prevented if women are screened regularly with a test called the Pap test.
? It is estimated that during 2003, about 12,200 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 4,100 women will die of the disease.
? Any woman who has a cervix can get cervical cancer, especially if she or her sexual partner has had sex with several other partners.
? Most often, cervical cancer develops in women aged 40 or older.
? Abnormal cells in the cervix and cervical cancer don?t always cause symptoms, especially at first. That?s why getting tested for cervical cancer is important, even if there are no symptoms.
? When it is found early and treated, cervical cancer is highly curable.
? Most deaths from cervical cancer could be avoided if women had regular checkups with the Pap test.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, now in two forms, could also reduce incidence, the authors said. GARDASIL, the first HPV vaccine targeting females ages 9 to 26 to prevent invasive cervical cancer, was released in 2006. It was followed by the CERVARIX vaccine, which is targeted to females 10 to 25.

However, HPV vaccine use lags behind other adolescent vaccines, Giuliano said.

?Barriers to HPV vaccination include costs, perceived safety issues, and the perception that vaccination is unnecessary if the woman or child is not sexually active,? Pierce Campbell said. ?Parental knowledge, attitudes and beliefs influence utilization, as well. Physician recommendation of the HPV vaccine is a key factor to its use, yet many primary care physicians have not been proactive in promoting it, especially to young adolescents in the target age groups.?

The most important thing you can do to avoid getting cervical cancer is to have regular Pap tests.

What is the Pap Test?
The Pap test, also called the Pap smear, is a cervical cancer screening test. It is not used to detect other kinds of cancer. It is done in a doctor?s office or a clinic. This test can find abnormal cells in the cervix that may turn into cancer if they?re not treated.

During the test, the doctor or nurse uses a plastic or metal instrument, called a speculum, to widen the vagina. This helps the doctor or nurse examine the vagina and the cervix, and collect a few cells and mucus from the cervix and the area around it. These cells are placed on a slide and sent to a laboratory to be checked for abnormal cells.

The doctor or nurse also performs a pelvic exam, checking the uterus, ovaries and other organs to make sure there are no problems. There are times when a doctor may perform a pelvic exam without giving you a Pap test. Ask your doctor or nurse which tests you?re having, if you?re unsure.

Who Does Not Need to be Tested?
The only women who do not need regular Pap tests are:

? Those over age 65 who have had regular Pap
tests with normal results and have been told
by their doctors that they don?t need to be
tested anymore.

? Women who do not have a cervix. This
includes women whose cervix was removed as
part of an operation to remove the uterus.
(The surgery is called a hysterectomy.)

However, a small number of women who
have had this operation still have a cervix and
should continue having regular Pap tests. If
you?re not sure whether you have a cervix,
speak to your doctor about it.

Because HPV infection in men contributes to HPV infection in women and the subsequent development of invasive cervical cancer, an additional strategy to reduce incidence has been the HPV vaccination of males, the authors said.

?Gender-neutral HPV vaccination would result in maximal disease reduction,? they wrote. ?Universal HPV vaccination has the potential to reduce the incidence of invasive cervical cancer and its precancerous lesions by 91 percent.?

Achieving Early Retirement With Melaleuca

A Melaleuca couple

The baby boomer generationincludes 79 million people?26 percent of the population?in just the United States alone. In 2011, the first of this generation reached age 65, and for the 19 years after, approximately 10,000 more of them will reach that age every single day.

Needless to say, financing retirement is a hot topic these days. Far too many retirement-age folks are getting caught without enough money to survive after they leave the workforce. And with fewer jobs available for older workers, many baby boomers are learning that they won?t be able to work through their retirement years even if they want to.

Retirement should be on your mind whether you?re 20 or 60, whether you have grandchildren or you?re young and single, and whether you?re wealthy or poor. As Corporate Director Jim McCune is fond of saying, ?Your life today is the result of your attitude and the choices you have made in the past; your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitude and the choices you make today.?

Melaleuca: A plan with a future

A Melaleuca couple readingA typical day for Terry and Marty Johnson might start with business calls, but the Johnsons will tell you their official employment status is ?retired.? Their lifestyle might not fit the stereotypical concept of retirement?you won?t find any rocking chairs on their front porch and they aren?t counting sunsets yet?but the Johnsons say they?re spending their time exactly how they like to spend it.

?I want to help this little team in the Texas Hill Country get where they want to be,? Marty says about her morning Melaleuca calls. ?We helped one of our customers become a Director this month. We go to bed when we want to, wake up when we want to and have our morning coffee together every day. It?s a huge blessing to have the resources, time and health we have.?

Although the Johnsons enjoy a tremendous amount of flexibility in their schedules today, their lives weren?t always that way.

When they first heard about Melaleuca, the Johnsons never imagined it would help them purchase a home and retire early. Terry already had an established career as the president of Oklahoma Christian University, and Marty served as the university?s first lady. Their schedule was consumed with campus construction and renovations, increasing student enrollments, and hosting university events, as well as spending time with their two recently married daughters.

Then one day, Executive Director II Dr. Michael Feldman, a university donor, paid Marty a visit.

?He and Nancy Mitchell, my sister-in-law, pulled up in a brand-new Mercedes convertible,? Marty remembers. ?They told me about this neat company in Idaho Falls that made some outstanding products. I told them I didn?t have time to build a business?but then I tried the products.?

A business built on exceptional products

Before she knew it, Marty was sharing Melaleuca?s products with others, inadvertently laying the foundation for her Melaleuca business.

Soon after, Marty achieved Senior Director and qualified for the Car Bonus. Terry already drove an elegant, spacious Lincoln Town Car that belonged to the university, but Marty had been good-naturedly driving a beat-up Chevrolet Citation, complete with a difficult-to-maneuver stick shift and broken air conditioner. Then, with her Car Bonus, Marty purchased a sharp-looking green Mercury Grand Marquis?the first of seven cars Marty paid for with Car Bonus checks.

?I loved having a legitimate car,? Marty says. ?That Citation was so hard to drive.?

Only nine months later, Marty became an Executive Director and achieved a larger annual income than she ever imagined.

?Melaleuca helped me realize I had the ability to earn a larger income,? Marty says. ?I took pride in that, and Terry was so appreciative of having another income stream.?

From house to home

The Johnsons knew that some day they?d need to leave their university-owned house in Oklahoma City. When Terry learned of a picturesque home loaded with amenities on a verdant golf resort near their grandchildren in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, his curiosity was piqued. The Johnsons closed on the house just as Terry finished his 21-year tenure as a university president.

?Our Melaleuca income gave us the courage to purchase that home,? Terry says. ?Without Melaleuca, we never would have ventured out and acquired a place like this.?

For five more years, Terry continued working as the university?s chancellor. Marty, however, loved their new home in Texas and started spending more and more time there. Before long, the Johnsons took an early retirement and moved to Texas for good.

?Not only did we purchase that beautiful property, but Terry also retired at 58,? Marty says. ?We couldn?t have done that without our Melaleuca income.?

An early retirement unlocked new opportunities. In just a few years, they traveled to China, Croatia, Turkey, Greece, France, Italy and Spain. Marty particularly loved Paris, and Terry enjoyed seeing the Terra Cotta Soldiers in Xi?an, China, in person.

?We were still in really good health when we retired,? Terry says. ?It was amazing for us to have time freedom to travel before we reached our 60s and to engage with our grandkids while they were still young. We got to see and do things we might not have done if we?d retired later in life.?

Just two years ago, the Johnsons achieved Total Financial Freedom when they paid off their mortgage. Melaleuca CEO Frank L. VanderSloot flew out to help them celebrate by burning their mortgage papers.

?It was emotional for us to pay off our mortgage and burn the papers,? Marty says. ?There?s no greater feeling than not having a house payment. We hosted a big cookout with 75 friends?it was really exciting.?

?Earlier in our lives, we carried too much debt, and the difference is night and day,? Terry adds. ?We really believed in getting ourselves out of debt so we could focus on sharing our resources with others in need.?

Now, 12 years since they retired and 20 since they started building a Melaleuca business, the Johnsons enjoy the peace of mind that comes from true residual income combined with freedom from debt. They know they?ve created a legacy of financial freedom they can pass on to their children and grandchildren.

?We invested in a self-retirement program while I was working,? Terry says. ?But we really haven?t had to draw much from that fund or rely on Social Security because our Melaleuca checks take care of our monthly expenses.?

Free from financial stress, they spend their time with hobbies and family. Terry enjoys writing books, and Marty ?has never met a set of golf clubs she didn?t like.? They?re planning to take their family on a trip to Hawaii to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014. In the meantime, they love traveling to support their favorite baseball team: the St. Louis Cardinals.

?We attended the World Series in 2006 and again in 2011, and we were at the all-star game in St. Louis in 2009,? Terry says. ?Just last night I bought baseball tickets for a St. Louis trip with our grandchildren in July and tickets for the opera while we?re there. Those are trips we almost take for granted; they?re just part of the time and financial freedom we enjoy because of Melaleuca.?

Markets steady as focus remains on Spain, Greece

LONDON (AP) ? Financial markets recovered their poise Thursday, though investors remained concerned that Greece and Spain will struggle to implement thier debt-reduction strategies.

The mood in markets improved modestly from Wednesday, when violent street protests in Greece and Spain over upcoming austerity packages spooked investors.

In Greece, the leaders of the three parties that make up the coalition appear to have agreed to the broad outlines of a spending cuts package that the country must impose to keep receiving vital rescue loans. The meeting took place a day after more than 50,000 anti-austerity protesters took to the streets of Athens.

Greater focus was been centered on Spain, where the government unveiled new austerity policies amid mounting concerns over the country's economic future.

Recession-hit Spain has come under pressure to tap a bond-buying program from the European Central Bank that has been partly designed to keep a lid on the country's borrowing costs. But the government has been reluctant to request the help for fear of the conditions attached.

That has unnerved markets, ending the recent weeks' relative calm in markets.

"You have to admire European politicians for their consistent ability to be able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory," said Gary Jenkins, managing director of Swordfish Research.

Spain's new austerity and economic reform package, which was still being unveiled at the end of the European trading session, comes in the wake of a violent protest in Madrid and big falls in Spanish stocks.

Stocks in Spain added to the previous day's hefty loss as the government started its press conference on the economic reforms. The main IBEX index in Madrid closed down 0.15 percent at 7,842. Meanwhile the yield on the country's 10-year bonds eased back below 6 percent.

Elsewhere, Europe's main markets pushed higher but the gains were dwarfed by Wednesday's losses.

The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.2 percent at 5,778 while Germany's DAX rose 0.2 percent to 7,290. The CAC-40 in France was 0.7 percent higher at 3,439.

In the U.S., investors brushed aside figures showing a downward revision to second quarter economic growth and focused on the fact that weekly jobless claims fell to their lowest level in two months. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.4 percent at 13,466 while the broader S&P 500 index rose 0.7 percent to 1,443.

The euro was up at $.1.2887 while the benchmark New York oil price rose $1.22 to $91.20 a barrel.

The market gains started earlier, in Asia, helped by expectations the People's Bank of China will soon take more steps to ease a slowdown in the world's No. 2 economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed more than 1.1 percent to 20,762.29 and mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index jumped 2.6 percent to 2,056.32. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index also gained 2.6 percent to 837.96.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose about 0.5 percent to 8,949.87, a day before the release of industrial production and retail sales figures.

Ethically+Diverse - Columbia Business School - Columbia University

Four years into the financial crisis, amidst the many questions about regulation, bailouts and executive compensation, one question has received less attention than is perhaps warranted: Would a more diverse Wall Street ? which remains largely white and male ? make for a more ethical Wall Street?

The assumption built into that question ? that with greater diversity comes more ethical behavior ? is ripe for investigation. There is no direct evidence that diverse firms are more moral than their homogeneous counterparts, although there is some research suggesting links between diversity, fairness, and equality. And other research suggests that homogeneous groups experience more conformity than diverse groups ?that people in a homogeneous group are more likely to try ?getting along and going along? as a way to remain part of the group and are less likely to counter questionable behavior. Recognizing a dearth of research about diversity and ethics, Professor Katherine Phillips and Sun Young (Sunny) Kim of Northwestern University conducted two simply designed experiments to look more closely at how diversity is perceived with relevance to ethics.

In one study, the researchers told participants that a 217-person firm had about 40 percent women in its ranks, and that 47 percent of its staff were black, Asian, or Latino. Researchers told a second set of participants about the same firm, but described the firm as having only about 5 percent minorities and women on staff.

Next, researchers told participants that the firm was the subject of some recent media scrutiny suggesting as-yet unproven but questionable events that negatively impacted investors and cast doubt on the firm?s ethicality. The researchers then asked participants to rate the company on a scale of one to seven for a series of questions. For example: How much do you think this company acted in its own self-interest? How much do you think this company would regret its decisions? How much do you think this company values ethics? How harshly do you think this company should be penalized?

Overwhelmingly, the more diverse company was perceived as the more ethical company. Participants were far less likely to perceive that the firm was acting in its own self-interest and were more likely to believe the firm was less at fault than a homogeneous company facing the same rumors of wrong doing. ?Participants felt that the firm was in fact more ethical, that it valued ethics more, and that it regretted its decisions more, and it should be penalized less for the behavior,? Phillips says.

To see how diversity impacted the perception of how companies combat unethical behavior, the researchers introduced a twist in their second study. Once more, they randomly assigned participants to two groups, describing a very diverse firm to one group and a homogeneous firm to the other group. In each group some participants were told that a task force made up of diverse members was charged with fixing the firm?s ethical problems, while some were told that a task force of homogeneous members would be on the case.

?But we found that companies can?t really patch up an ethical lapse by slapping on a diversity Band-Aid,? Phillips says. ?Homogeneous companies did get a small boost if they used a diverse task force rather than homogeneous one, but people were far more likely to perceive that a diverse firm with a diverse task force was truly interested in rooting out bad behavior.?

That suggests to Phillips that firms need to give careful consideration to their composition ? making sure they have a balanced workforce and communicating that they value diversity is central to instilling confidence in consumers.

What is it about diversity that contributes to the perception of ethicality? One possibility is that diversity creates a halo effect. ?People may see a firm that they perceive has gone out of its way to hire a diverse workforce and assume that it must be concerned with fairness and equality, and therefore it must be a moral company,? Phillips says. ?You can say ?oh, diversity is important, our ethics are important.? But a company can?t control people?s perceptions if people see that the company is really homogeneous.?

There are compelling practical arguments for diversification. ?When companies are too homogeneous they create environments where people are more concerned about conforming than solving problems. Consequently, people may be more likely to fall prey to unethical behaviors,? Phillips notes. ?Think about what happens if the House of Representatives swings too far left or right ? we start to see actions and behavior left unchecked with no counterbalance. Businesses also need the checks and balances that diversity provides.?

Katherine Phillips is the Paul Calello Professor of Leadership and Ethics in the Management Division at Columbia Business School.

I Take Joy | The Last Homely House?a project of life art

Helen Allingham

?Frodo was now safe in the Last Homely House east of the Sea. That house was, as Bilbo had long ago reported, ?a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all.? Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear and sadness.?
The Fellowship of the Ring?by J.R.R. Tolkien

As a lover of great literature, Rivondell, in Lord of the Rings, captivated my attention and Sarah?s and Joy?s attention. Picturing our home as a place that remembers all the great life from eras gone by and that captures its beauty, has been one of our goals, that has given us hours and years of collecting and crafting and nurturing over the years.

A library that holds all the great books of children?s literature and classics and great thinkers, biographies and writers is a must. And now, due to Clay?s kindness to move his office to the basement, I have our library as a tea room of sorts. With comfy chairs, a tea set, art and paintings from my background all over the walls, with candle light and music?it is a lovely getaway where I can share heart-to-heart with all in my wake.

A well-stocked kitchen with all sorts of home-made recipes crafted over years of testing, with all the holiday food; food for those who are ill; birthday fare; winter-cold-night soups and breads and all sorts of healthy variety in between.

Fireplaces where stories are told and ideas discussed and children are cuddled.

bedrooms with comfy chairs and piles of books in baskets to encourage reading and quiet times and of course candles galore.

Piano, guitars, drums, flute, dulcimer?all collected over the years?some more used than others, but all for practicing producing music of all sorts.

Games and book baskets and art books and cd?s and Pandora and dvd?s from all imaginings to instruct, inspire, soothe, comfort and to stoke the imagination.

Clusters of chairs, grouped together to encourage great and close conversations?rockers on the front porch; setees and big chairs on the back deck; gatherings of chairs in 2?s all over the house to make a close meeting and discipleship time for all who are there.

And of course a bookshelf in every room, with each child collecting his own library.

A suitable place for traditions celebrated and momentous occasions retold and the Bible read, over and over and over again?to remember Him and stories of faith and heroes and courage and holiness.

This is what I have had in my heart to shape?a home that breathes life and truth and love into all who would enter?

To make sure my home, for my family and friends, is indeed the last homely house and that all that has been excellent and worthwhile over the ages is celebrated in its walls?

because everyone needs a place to belong and a home where welcome is always fresh with all who cross the doorway.
