We're not gonna lie. The Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the news flow is already starting to slow down as everyone enjoys an extra day in the sun (or whatever weather you're having locally). But even so, here's something that's cool enough that we would probably highlight on a day with big trailers and such. Iconic filmmakers Billy Wilder, John Ford, Frank Capra and John Huston have their work immortalized on celluloid (some even by the Library of Congress) and now the directors themselves and their work have been commemorated with postal stamps. It's almost a rite of passage as an icon. Look!

Here are the four stamps commemorating each director and one of their seminal works via The Playlist:

The set includes just four stamps for now, highlighting The Searchers from John Ford, It Happened One Night from Frank Capra, Some Like It Hot from Billy Wilder and The Maltese Falcon from John Huston. Not only did each of these filmmakers revolutionize movies and have a legacy that has lasted decades and will continue to last as long as cinema itself, but each of these films are staples of their respective genres and inspire hoards of aspiring filmmakers to this day. It's a shame people don't send more letters and such nowadays, otherwise I would slap these all over envelopes. They still make great collectors' items and affordable gifts at a price ranging from $1.80 to $9 depending on how many you want. Cool?

Germany sold $5.7 billion of debt today to yield 0 percent, a reflection of how much Europe's largest economy has diverged from its southern neighbors who are paying far more to borrow.

Germany is not only one of the few growing European economies but its domestic finances are rock solid, unlike its eurozone peers. Spain and Italy are paying? more than six percent to borrow, because investors fear they'll default. European bankers, worried about ending up holding worthless paper, have few good options but the Bundesbank.?

Seven percent is perceived as the threshold beyond which borrowing becomes unsustainable ? Greece, Portugal and Ireland all asked the European Union and International Monetary Fund for financial aid after their borrowing costs breached that threshold.

The zero-interest sale reflects investors' interest in "a return of their money over a return on their money,"?Rabobank rate strategist Richard McGuire told Reuters.

High interest rates are exacerbating the economic problems in southern Europe. Greece, now in its fifth year of recession, seems more and more likely to leave the eurozone. Even after negotiating a far-reaching debt reduction with private investors earlier this year, the country won?t be able to service the remaining debt. Reuters quoted two Eurogroup officials today confirming that member states are being asked to prepare individual contingency plans for the eventuality of a Greek exit.?

While Germany made its record-breaking bond sale, EU leaders prepared for yet another crisis summit. Tonight they are convening for an informal meeting in Brussels to discuss measures to stimulate economic growth in the eurozone. The meeting is seen as the first battle between German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who strictly objects to growth programs financed through additional borrowing, and the new French president, Francois Hollande, unofficial spokesman for the growing group of leaders who advocate credit-based stimulus plans.

Before the meeting, Germany?s deputy finance minister, Thomas Steffen, rejected renewed calls for the introduction of eurobonds ? debt securities issued by the eurozone as a whole which in effect would mean that Greece could borrow at the same rate as Germany.

?We would sign up for 100 percent liability for new debt in the euro area,? Steffen said in Berlin today. ?We can?t do this, we?re not strong enough economically.?

Space station grabs 'Dragon by the tail'

For the first time in history, a commercial spaceship has journeyed to the International Space Station, carrying vital supplies to the astronauts. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

The International Space Station's crew reached out today with a robotic arm to grab SpaceX's Dragon cargo capsule and brought it in for the orbital outpost's first-ever hookup with a commercial spaceship.

It marks the station's first linkup with a U.S.-made spacecraft since last year's retirement of NASA's space shuttle fleet, and potentially opens the way for dozens of commercial cargo shipments. If the long-range plan unfolds as NASA hopes, U.S. astronauts could be shuttled back and forth on the Dragon or similar spacecraft within just a few years.

"Today, this really is the beginning of a new era in commercial spaceflight," said Alan Lindenmoyer, manager of NASA's commercial crew and cargo program.?

The hookup comes after Tuesday's successful launch of the Dragon atop a Falcon 9 rocket, and represents the culmination of years of planning and hundreds of millions of dollars of spending by NASA and California-based?SpaceX, known more formally as Space Exploration Technologies Corp. The company was founded a decade ago by dot-com billionaire Elon Musk, with aspirations of eventually sending humans to settle on Mars.

Musk said the technologies that were tested today will blaze a trail for those more ambitious trips to come. "This is a crucial step, and having achieved this step, it?makes the things in the future and the ultimate path toward humanity becoming a multiplanet species much, much more likely," he told reporters after the hookup. "The chances of that happening just went up dramatically, so people should be really excited about that."

But first things first: Today's operation marked the first full in-space test of the robotic Dragon spacecraft's procedure for approaching the station, and for that reason, every step along the way was carefully planned out and checked over the course of several hours.?The first steps in the procedure were tested on Thursday, during a series of maneuvers that successfully brought the 14-foot-long, 12-foot-wide, gumdrop-shaped capsule within 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) of the $100 billion space station.

Today, a far more ambitious set of maneuvers brought the Dragon all the way to the station ? but the trip wasn't always easy.

Fixing the glitches
The craft started out by taking up a position 250 meters (820 feet) below the station. From that vantage point, the Dragon was put through a series of maneuvers to test the station-to-spacecraft communication system. The space station's astronauts had the Dragon approach, then retreat, then approach, then hold its position.

After assessing the data, NASA said it wanted to do a double-check on the Dragon's thermal imagers, which are part of the rendezvous sensor system. The spacecraft was commanded to approach to a distance of 200 meters (656 feet), then stop while NASA took stock again. Space agency spokesman Josh Byerly said SpaceX's team made "minor modifications" to the thermal imaging system, just to make sure that it was providing tracking data in line with what other instruments were showing.

The Dragon was on its way to a 30-meter (98-foot) checkpoint when the team at SpaceX's Mission Control in Hawthorne, Calif., ordered the spacecraft to retreat to a distance of 70 meters (230 feet). NASA's Mission Control said the SpaceX team wanted to correct bad laser sensor readings that the Dragon was getting from a stray reflector on the station's Japanese-built Kibo laboratory.?To work around the problem, SpaceX narrowed the field of view for the laser sensor so that it wouldn't pick up light from the offending reflector.

"One of the lasers wasn't working well, so we had to recalibrate the laser and tighten the beam, and then it did work," Musk explained afterward.

Catching a Dragon by the tail
Once the fix was made, Dragon returned to the 30-meter checkpoint and moved in for the final approach.?When the craft reached a distance of 10 meters (33 feet), NASA astronaut Don Pettit used the station's 17-meter-long (60-foot-long) robotic arm to grab hold of the Dragon's grapple attachment at 9:56 a.m. ET.

"It looks like we've got us a Dragon by the tail," Pettit told NASA's Mission Control.

"?Congratulations on a wonderful capture," Mission Control's Megan Behnken replied. "?You've made a lot of folks happy down here, over in Hawthorne and right here in Houston."?

Pettit joked that the operation went so smoothly it felt like a computer simulation.?"This sim went really well," he said. "We're ready to turn it around and do it for real."?

It took another couple of hours to pull in the Dragon and get it fully hooked up to the station's Harmony module. NASA and SpaceX refer to this operation as a "berthing" rather than a "docking," because the Dragon is being passively pulled in rather than powering itself into the docking port.

The completion of berthing at 12:02 p.m. ET put SpaceX in the company of four governmental space ventures?? NASA, the Russian Federal Space Agency, the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency ? that have built vehicles capable of hooking up with the space station.

Musk said that he'd probably have to relax SpaceX's rule against drinking alcohol at its Hawthorne headquarters to accommodate a champagne celebration, but it was clear that the hundreds of employees who gathered to watch the berthing were already on a natural high. They cheered for Musk as he spoke to reporters over a video link???and when he told them, "I love you guys, too," they broke into a chant of "E-lon, E-lon, E-lon!"?

Unloading the cargo
Dragon's hatch is scheduled to be opened early Saturday morning. The station's six astronauts will unload about 1,000 pounds (460 kilograms) of cargo, including food, clothes, batteries and a laptop, plus 15 student-designed experiments. Then about 1,455 pounds (660 kilograms) of Earth-bound cargo?? including personal items from the crew as well as completed experiments and old equipment?? will be loaded up on the Dragon. These payloads don't come anywhere close to the Dragon's capacity (6 tons going up, 3 tons coming down), but they were made part of the mission as non-essential ride-alongs.

On May 31, the capsule will be detached from the station and sent back down toward a Pacific Ocean splashdown and recovery off the coast of Southern California. That part of the operation went off successfully during Dragon's first orbital test mission in December 2010, but this would mark the first-ever return of a commercial spacecraft from the space station. Russia's Soyuz capsule is the only other existing space vehicle capable of returning space station payloads.

A fully successful mission would open the way for commercial space station resupply missions to begin in earnest. SpaceX already has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA for 12 Dragon shipments through 2016. If all goes well, the first flight covered by that contract could lift off in September, said Mike Suffredini, NASA's space station program manager. Another company, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., is developing a cargo spacecraft known as Cygnus to take on space station shipments as well, under the terms of a $1.9 billion contract. The Cygnus has yet to be flight-tested, however.

In addition to the cargo contract, SpaceX is one of four companies that is receiving millions of dollars from NASA to produce spaceships capable of carrying astronauts. In SpaceX's case, the Dragon would be modified with a launch escape system, while the other companies ? Blue Origin, the Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp.?? are working on other spaceship concepts, ranging from capsules to Sierra Nevada's mini-space plane. The first astronaut flights could take place as early as 2017.

Until that time, NASA will have to depend on the Russians to transport U.S. astronauts on Soyuz spacecraft, at a cost of more than $60 million a seat. SpaceX and other players in the commercial space race say they can meet or beat that price.

The transition to commercial operations for orbital transport is a key part of the Obama administration's plan for future space exploration.

"We?re handing off to the private sector our transportation to the International Space Station so that NASA can focus on what we do best ? exploring even deeper into our solar system, with missions to an asteroid and Mars on the horizon," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said after the Dragon's launch. Unfortunately, many in Africa do not share Desmond Tutu?s position. In Africa homosexuality is illegal for men in 29 countries and for women it is illegal in 20 countries. Whilst this is the case in many African countries, it is not the case in South Africa where homosexuality is legal and visible and there is even a natural legislation which bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. There are however a lot of peer led organisations in most of the African countries that are working tirelessly to address this anomaly.

It has been found that in the traditional perception of African society,? heterosexual marriage is desired and childbearing is glorified, whilst being gay or lesbian is seen as deviant and alien to the social fabric of Africa. Gay or lesbian relationships in some African countries are described as a foreign concept and a practice that is against the cultural values, norms and dignity of Africa. Some hold the opinion that it is against the creation of man and woman as God designed them to be. In countries like Malawi, most ethnic groups recognise the arrangement of a man marrying a woman as natural and the basis of a healthy family. Legalising gay and lesbian relationships are seen to defy God?s arrangement that humanity should procreate, as it is argued that people in a same-sex relationship cannot bear children. Other debates in Africa have suggested that homosexuality is a psychological and social problem affecting western countries and should not be normalised in Africa in the name of human rights.

The impact of these cultural constraints for gay and lesbian teens cannot be underestimated in the African society. Teens find themselves with everything to lose if they come out. Homophobic environments exist everywhere including within families, churches and schools. Teens grow up in a culture and environment where being gay or lesbian is seen as wrong, with role models openly condemning these ?lifestyles?. Those who have been bold enough to come out risk losing everything, as they are normally dependant on their family. They experience isolation, humiliation and rejection.

Tackling homophobia in the African context is challenging though, as there are prejudicial attitudes and discrimination in all areas of society. Its effects are far reaching, with recent studies showing that homophobia is a major barrier to ending the HIV epidemic as it is preventing gay men?s access to prevention programs and treatment. There are now many calls to consider holistic approaches in addressing this issue. Community based organisations are being challenged to provide support to LGBT people who feel marginalised and isolated, which in turn may influence the attitudes of the communities themselves. Public campaigns with messages that challenge homophobia are seen as one avenue where awareness issues can be addressed. Above all, governments need to repeal the laws that ban homosexuality, as this can effectively reduce discrimination against LGBT, promote fundamental human rights and prevent the spread of HIV.

Imprisonment is the most common punishment in African countries where homosexuality is illegal. The countries? constitutions often include clauses protecting human rights which the anti-gay laws contradict. The laws can also vary within a nation depending on the religious laws of an area. The types of punishments in the African nations also varies depending on the severity of the act such as whether or not it was in private and whether there was actual intercourse or a only an ?indecent? act.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain, where the economy and banking system are at the frontline of the crisis, will meet newly elected French President Francois Hollande in Paris ahead of the evening summit to discuss policy positions - a marked shift away from the traditional Franco-German axis.

At nearly all previous summits over the past two years, Hollande's predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy met German Chancellor Angela Merkel beforehand to fix a strategy, prompting criticism from other leaders about diktats from Paris and Berlin.

In that respect, Hollande's victory has significantly changed the terms of the debate, with his call for greater emphasis on growth now a rallying cry for other leaders. That has set up a showdown with Merkel, who supports growth but whose primary objective is budget austerity and structural reform.

In his first EU summit, Hollande has also chosen to make a stand on euro bonds - the idea of metalizing euro zone debt - despite strong German opposition to an idea that has been hotly debated for more than two years.

He will have support from Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, among other leaders. But Merkel shows no sign of dropping her objections to the proposal, which she has said can only be discussed once there is much closer fiscal union in Europe.

The Netherlands, Finland, Austria and some smaller euro zone member states support her in that position.

"(Euro bonds) are the wrong prescription at the wrong time with the wrong side-effects," Germany's deputy finance minister, Steffen Kampeter, said this week, a position further underlined by other German government officials on Tuesday.

No decisions will be made at Wednesday's summit, which is intended to promote ideas on jobs and growth ahead of another meeting at the end of June, but it is clear that the debate over euro bonds and related bank rescue concerns will be intense.

EURO BONDS "ROAD MAP"

Olli Rehn, the European commissioner for economic affairs, threw his weight behind the proposal on Tuesday, saying it was time for a "road map" setting out the legal and fiscal steps need to bring about euro-zone bonds in the years ahead.

And Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, the body which represents EU leaders, said heads of state and government should abandon taboos as they think about the future of Europe and its economic framework.

"It is not too early to think ahead and to reflect on possible more fundamental changes to economic and monetary union," he wrote in a letter to the 27 EU leaders.

"In many ways, the perspective of moving towards a more integrated system would increase confidence in the euro and the European economy generally."

As well as exploring ways of resolving the sovereign debt problems that have torn the economies of Greece, Portugal and Ireland apart and threaten the stability of the euro, the leaders will assess how to stabilize their banking systems.

Spain is a particular concern, with a number of its banks laden with bad debts incurred by excessive lending during a property boom that has long since turned to bust and still has some way yet to go before it touches bottom.

The total amount of bad debt is estimated at more than 180 billion euros ($240 billion), while efforts to recapitalize and restructure the stricken banks have so far fallen short.

One proposal on the table is for the euro zone's rescue funds to be allowed to recapitalize banks directly, rather than having to lend to countries for on-lending to the banks.

But that is another idea with which Germany is uncomfortable, even though Merkel said on Tuesday it was necessary to come up with a way of dismantling banks across borders, a possible nod to a pan-eurozone bank restructuring scheme.

PROJECT BONDS

The formal agenda of Wednesday's meeting is jobs and growth, and specifically three ideas policymakers hope will provide some near-term stimulus to the European economy, which is barely growing and threatens to slip into recession.

On Tuesday, agreement was reached with the European Parliament on 'project bonds', instruments backed by the EU budget that can be used to finance energy, transport and telecoms projects alongside private sector investment.

A pilot program, using EU capital of 230 million euros, will run until 2013 and if successful could lead to up to 4.6 billion euros of new investment, EU officials say.

There is also a proposal to double the paid-in capital of the European Investment Bank, the EU's co-financing arm, to a little over 20 billion euros. That would increase its leverage and could eventually release up to 180 billion euros for investment in infrastructure.

Agreement on that proposal could be reached by the June 28-29 summit, but there remains opposition from some member states concerned that viable investment targets have to be identified first and that the EIB's strong track record could be undermined if money is thrown at bad projects.

The third initiative is to redirect EU structural funds - money from the EU's multi-year budget used to help poorer countries improve their infrastructure - to other areas where it might reap more immediate growth rewards.

The figures remain vague, and even if all three proposals were to be activated quickly - a big 'if' - economists and analysts are not convinced that would provide a sufficient shot in the arm to the euro zone and wider EU economy.

The bigger concern remains finding ways of resolving the sovereign debt and banking problems sapping euro zone economies, and pushing through the structural reforms to pension systems and labor markets that might make euro zone economies more competitive in the wider world and so better able to grow.

CLEVELAND A novel pancreatic cancer vaccine shows promise in improving survival when added to standard treatment, according to new research out of University Hospitals Case Medical Center's Seidman Cancer Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. The Phase 2 data was presented today (embargoed 11:00 am ET) at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, part of Digestive Disease Week in San Diego.

In the plenary session titled "Addition of Algenpantucel-L Immunotherapy to Standard Adjuvant Therapy for Pancreatic Cancer: a Phase 2 Study" (Tuesday, May 22, 8:00 a.m. PT Abstract # 028), Jeffrey Hardacre, MD, lead investigator, presented the updated data. The multi-site, nationwide study involved 70 patients with resected pancreatic cancer and suggests improvement in 12-month disease-free and overall survival.

"Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease with long-term survival less than 5%," says Dr. Hardacre, surgical oncologist with UH Case Medical Center and Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. "Better treatments are needed to improve survival and we are encouraged by the promising results of this vaccine therapy."

The vaccine, known as Algenpantucel-L, is unique from other approaches in that it is designed to trigger the patient's own immune system to destroy cancer cells. Algenpantucel-L, developed by NewLink Genetics Corporation, was added to standard adjuvant therapy for patients who have successfully undergone pancreatic surgical resection.

A pivotal, nationwide Phase 3 study of the vaccine, also led in part by Dr. Hardacre, has begun and will involve up to 722 patients.

Cancer of the pancreas is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, killing more than 35,000 Americans each year. Pancreatic cancer is characteristically aggressive with non-specific initial symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose early. Conventional therapies have little impact on prognosis and disease outcome. Surgical resection of the tumor is currently the only chance for a cure. Without resection, overall median survival is four to six months with an estimated five-year survival rate of 0.4 percent to 5 percent.

"Patients with pancreatic cancer have limited options and there have been few advances for this lethal disease in recent years," says Stan Gerson, MD, Director of the UH Seidman Cancer Center and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University. "We are proud that Jeff and our cancer center have played such a significant role in investigating this promising new treatment option."
